  59. Try out Mupfel that comes with the Gemini stuff, it allows "/" to be used
  60. instead of "\" and has many csh like features.  Also, it doesn't remap the
  61. keyboard (which make Gulam useless on my Australian (uk? us?) keyboard).

  110. Sorry folks - my previous posting got munged. Here is it again:
  111. I use DESKMG33 to allow me to select the required combination of auto progs,
  112. accs, desktop.inf and assign.sys. It works fine.
  113. But I downloaded OKAMI from Stuttgart, Deutschland (I think) and tried to
  114. run it without reading the docs carefully (my German isn't too good!). It
  115. comes with a prog called GEM.PRG, supposed to give access to *.accs from the
  116. shell. When I ran it, the menu bar didn't show any accs, and the system
  117. froze. I had to reboot (from h/disk). But it went into a non-terminating
  118. loop of auto folder programs load and reboot.
  119. If I  selected a setup without accs, from DESKMGR when it loaded from auto,
  120. all was well. But any setup with accs went into the lousy loop.
  121. I thought at first that idle.acc was the culprit, so i dragged it to trash -
  122. and all my files on h/d C: disappeared. When I reopened the C icon, they
  123. reappeared! Weird!
  124. Should I trash all my accs from the h/disk and recopy them from backup? Or will
  125.  this risk munging the disk? Do I have a virus? If so, how can I kill it?

  172. I have got problems using the spc format too. This is since I built in
  173. *overscan*. This is realy strange. Because it won't work even *overscan*
  174. is turned off. So is there any hope? I realy wou like to get my
  175. 256 colors back. This is a lot better then 16. (was :-( )
  176. On the ather hand - is there a way to use, at least, 16 colors while
  177. using the features of *overscan*?

  231. Apparently, (and unfortunately), I think Regent Software went out of ST
  232. business.  BUT, apparently, a dedicated user of their materials, has
  233. taken it over.
  234.  
  235. REGENT BASE is really good in many ways.  One of the best ways was in the
  236. fantastic user support given by Frank Cohen; such support was important because
  237. the documentation was poor.  (To give an idea as to the wonderful support
  238. Frank gave, I was a problem I could not solve; he had me send him my
  239. application; he found a bug in Regent Base itself, made the correction, and
  240. sent me the corrected version!  Can't be beat!)
  241.  
  242. The other problem was speed.
  243.  
  244. BUT, once you know what you are doing, it is pretty nice.  Again, the learning
  245. curve, at least for me, was steep.

  266. I also had the 'pty' problem. Apparently MGR is looking for the SHELL
  267. environment variable to figure out which shell to run. If SHELL is
  268. not defined or points to the wrong thing, you get the 'pty' message.
  269. I first 'setenv SHELL ...' and then run MGR and it works ... sort of.
  270.  
  271. I had MANY, MANY other problems with these programs. They may be related
  272. to the fact that I am running TOS 1.0 (520ST with 4M memory).
  273.  
  274. 1) MiNT will not install by itself, especially from an auto folder.
  275.         Most of the time it crashes because it can't install the proper
  276.         cookie (or something like that). I wrote a little TSR to install
  277.         the cookie and I can get MiNT up after that, but it is a major pain.
  278.         Sometimes MiNT crashes on startup because, it says, something is
  279.         trying to kill it. Sounds paranoid to me.
  280.  
  281. 2) After I finally get MiNT running, I run a shell (GULAM) and set the
  282.         HOME, and SHELL environment variables, then run MGR from the shell.
  283.         Mgr starts up, but does not execute the commands in mgr.rc, which
  284.         is in the HOME directory. When I create a new window, it starts up
  285.         a bash shell, but everything is very unstable. The system crashes if
  286.         I try to open another window, or give just about any command besides
  287.         'cd' or 'ls'. After I open a window, I can see the cursor blinking
  288.         over on the left side of the screen.
  289.  
  290. 3) As an aside, what is supposed to be the default bash startup file on
  291.         the ST? I can't create '.bashrc' on the ST, and bash.rc and other
  292.         obvious guesses don't work either.
  293.  
  294. I (and apparently others) would greatly appreciate some help from someone
  295. who has this stuff working. It looks like wonderful software, if it would
  296. only work. Sorry for such a long message.

  319. I don't know about Mupfel, but Gulam comes along with a key fix
  320. program, which inserts your local key map definitions into Gulam.
  321. Gulam works fine on my French keyboard!  Or do you want some special
  322. symbols?

  373. to get atari's monitor but I wonder if that is the best choice. as I see
  374. it, I can:

  379. d) lament about all the really good software that runs in mono only.

  570. GNU C is the best because it can become better than the best. If your
  571. MWC is better, then I would just fix the source code of gcc so that
  572. gcc could produce better code sequence as to that particular case that
  573. mwc pointed at. People say gcc is inevitably poor because it does not
  574. look after 68000 adequately because 68000 is now inconsequential. I
  575. don't think so. m68k specific code can be added as much as one would
  576. feel necessary: theres no limit to it. And I must mention the gnu assembler
  577. is very good in terms of determining the shortest branch code etc.

  637. In fact, it was a faulty joystick in port 1. The fire switch was blocked ON.
  638. Consequently, this disables the keyboard and the mouse.

  640. Recommendation:

  642. If your keyboard and/or your mouse doesn't have any action, disconnect any
  643. device in port 0 or port 1 and try a program using the keyboard.

  659. I recently installed a program that uses GDOS or
  660. AMCGDOS. When I did this, some of my midi programs are slowing
  661. down there output to my midi instruments.
  662. I think that only midi programs, that are using
  663. atari's midi out TOS call (as i remember it Midiws() ), are
  664. slowing down there output.
  665.  
  666. Is this because there are some additional functions added by
  667. GDOS/ AMCGDOS and the ST must search into a table to lookup
  668. some routines, also the ones in the ROMS?
  669. If this is the clue, why can't GDOS bypass the default routines
  670. ,which are normally in ROM, immediately and uses the GDOS
  671. functions afterward? It seems to me that GDOS first looks
  672. if there is a GDOS function called and then passes to the
  673. default ROM functions if a not GDOS call is called.
  674.  
  675. Is there a GDOS version available, which hasn't this problem?
  676. Any suggestions out there?
